SRI CHINMOY

(1931 - 2007)

This site started out as a running blog, but now seems to have expanded to include triathlon, cycling, trekking and whatever else I try my hand (or feet) at. The common thread is "Self-Transcencence", a term popularised by Sri Chinmoy, my spiritual teacher since 1993. Best known as a meditation teacher, Sri Chinmoy was a decathlete in his youth and later an endurance athlete and record-breaking weightlifter. He encouraged his students to make exercise and endurance sport a part of their lives, so that the outer quest for sporting progress would energise their inner lives (as well as bringing them a lot of satisfaction). He once said that "each step forward has a sacred meaning of its own", and that's how this site acquired it's name. The site is a bit of a jumble, some articles getting into spiritual stuff and others just straightforward race reports - thanks for reading this far, and please check out the recent articles including those on Sri Chinmoy, Iron-distance triathlon, fell running and climbing Mount Agung in Bali. Pictures on this page are random selections from each year's articles, apart from those immediately below which are me in my first triathlon, a stunning view from Huang Shan, the forested summit of Doi Pui, the trophy I was presented with by Ongkar Tony Smith for running the equivalent of 4 marathons in 24 hours and a peaceful corner of jungle in Penang where we hiked in 2006. For 2012, my main challenge is to organise a Triathlon :)
