Slieve Foy Mountain Run May 2019

I can't remember the last time I ran up a reasonable sized mountain - at over 600m (and we started from sea level) Slieve Foy definitely qualifies!

Straight after the morning 2 mile race where we'd ran at full gas, Suswara and I (still in road shoes) chose an easy but long ascent that ended up being an 8 mile loop. We headed out of Carlingford on a lane past cottages and more modern and affluent retreats, covering a lot of ground on road before we finally emerged on to the hillside. It felt great to be running on smooth, dry fellside with sheep-cropped grass and the going fairly easy.

After the long, shallow zig-zags we hit the ridge and the scramble started, the summit coming into view every so often and then hiding behind crags and ridges. Conditions were as benign as you'll find in the hills - mild and with only a light breeze, the going mostly dry underfoot though we did have to skirt the odd bog.

From the summit we hammered it straight down to Carlingford - looks like I'm properly back to fell running!
